What is Botox?

Botox is a registered cosmetic application approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to treat certain facial wrinkles including severe lateral canthal lines (crow’s feet). Botox is primarily made from a toxin found in bacteria called botulinum toxin. This is used in many different medications to treat a variety of issues.

However, you need to be clear in your consultation what you want to focus on and improve. There could be forehead lines, crow’s feet, lines around your mouth and lines under your eyes. Each area may need a different dosage amount and will definitely need individual treatments. You can get multiple areas done within the same consultation and appointment.

Avoiding the Myths about Botox

Botox has been around for almost 30 years and has been an effective anti-aging drug for almost as long. However in that amount of time, there have been a number of myths that consistently permeate society from poor sources or misquoted stories.

  1. The frozen face syndrome that has gotten media attention is generally due to a patient getting to large of a dose of Botox and possibly over several treatments. With an expert at Ennis Plastic Surgery this has never happened. Less dosage more often is a better long term treatment plan than one large dose.
  2. Botox is a short term fix. This myth permeates because patients are not committed to the process. Reducing the aging process must be consistent and performed over a long span of time in order to continually reduce its effects. Getting one treatment will help you look younger, wrinkle free and fresh for 3-4 months, before the natural aging process of your muscles sets to work again. However, Botox has been proven in studies to combat facial lines and wrinkles over a long period of time with consistent treatments better than any other treatment. Essentially, the muscles causing the wrinkles learn over time not to contract to the same degree because of the inhibiting action of Botox.

  3. Wait till you have Wrinkles. It has been proven in a number of clinical studies that those that get “preventative” Botox in their 20’s often can get ahead of their wrinkles with fewer treatments. Once wrinkles actually form, they are often harder to remove then before they appear. Another myth associated with this is that you should not get Botox at certain ages. While it is not recommended for anyone under 21, there is not a maximum age when Botox would not help you look younger.

Aftercare Botox Care Advice

When you do get a Botox Cosmetic treatment there are few aftercare instructions, but this can vary from patient to patient. The procedure generally includes a local anesthetic and needle injections. These can cause mild irritation, swelling, redness and discomfort as well as possible itching. These symptoms can last up to 36 hours but generally fades within a few hours after treatment. In 1-5% of patients mild bruising and the possibility of a drooping eyelid, both of which are temporary and chances are reduced when treatment is performed by an experienced clinician. If symptoms continue after 36 hours call the Institute for a follow up check.

What you need to avoid directly after treatment is direct skin manipulation in the area of the treatment. Avoiding facial massages or excessive rubbing in the treated area is suggested. Also, avoiding exercise for 24 hours after a treatment is recommended. There may be pin point dots or light bruising after the treatment, in most cases these fade after only a few hours. If you do experience pain or discomfort, standard over the counter pain medications should be enough to overcome the pain.

At any time after your treatment if you are not 100% satisfied with the results you are always welcome to return to Ennis Plastic Surgery for a touch up session to ensure you get the results you want.

How long will Botox last?

Botox treatment results generally last between 3 to 4 months, but this can depend on the patient and the concentration of the dosage used. Dosages can differ depending on the patient, the severity of the wrinkles being worked on and goal of the treatment.
